Environmental Symbiotic System Major

Graduate School

Exploring the Nexus of Human Society and the Global Environment

In this course, students will examine the symbiotic relationship between human society and the global environment, using a 'systematic technical development' approach. We address the topic through research of the two main specialized areas. The first area is Design Techniques by Applied Biology, where we examine the various systems of Nature (the atmospheric system, water environment system, ecological system and biological systems) and how they can be applied to engineering applications. Secondly, Design Techniques of Social Environments will establish the method of evaluation and the techniques required to create societal systems that co-exist with Nature for future generations.

Design Techniques by Applied Biology Project

Biological engineering is used to facilitate the development of engineering techniques. This will be achieved through studying how engineering developments effect the environment in general, and living organisms in particular. We will analyze specific organisms to learn the mechanisms of the materials that constitute that organism, their energy sources, and any morphogenetic processes that have, or may have, occurred as a result of a particular development. Students will then propose engineering ideas and solutions that can be applied to attain desirable outcomes.

Design Techniques of Social Environment Project

Students will design solutions to social environmental problems using an engineering perspective. This is a relatively new field of study. In this project, we choose specific cities and/or regions, and then research how various systems operate within that area, such as energy systems, resources recycling systems, and traffic systems. Using engineering methodologies, students then design and create a solution where a sustainable social environment system can be implemented to overcome the existing social environmental problems.
